Finding Your Own Way: Small Moments That Build Confidence

Sometimes confidence grows in unexpected ways.

Not always through big achievements or major milestones, but through small moments that remind us what helps us feel comfortable, capable, and ourselves.

In a recent reflection, Helen shared five simple things that make her smile. They are small, everyday experiences, yet each one creates a moment where the mind can settle and the day feels a little lighter.

Here are Helen’s five.

1. Green space

For Helen, one of the first things that makes her smile is being in a green space. That moment when you step outside, the air feels different, and your shoulders drop as your body finally breathes out.

2. Seren

Seren, whom she describes as joyful at all times. Sometimes, the people or companions in our lives bring a natural sense of happiness simply by being themselves.

3. Friends and good conversation

Spending time with friends, sitting together with a cup of tea, talking and laughing until suddenly you realise that hours have passed without noticing.

4. Finding her own way of doing things

Another thing she mentions is discovering that you can do something in your own way. She talks about throwing a ball for Seren and realising she never really learned how to throw it “properly”. But she found her own way of doing it.

Sometimes the joy is simply in finding ways of doing things that work for you, even if nobody else does them the same way.

5. A very specific coffee

And then there are the small rituals. For Helen, it’s a very specific coffee. One shot, oat milk, creamy enough that you can almost spoon the foam.

When you hear someone share their five things, something interesting happens.

You start thinking about your own.

But there is also another idea hidden inside Helen’s list, especially in the story about throwing the ball for Seren. It reminds us that confidence often grows when people realise they can approach things in their own way.

This is particularly important for young people exploring their future and considering different career opportunities.

Not everyone learns, creates, or develops skills in exactly the same way. When people are given the chance to experiment, practise, and discover what works for them, confidence grows naturally.

At Give-Get-Go Education, learning focuses on developing practical skills and confidence for the creative industries and wider career opportunities. Through training, collaboration, and creative exploration, individuals begin to recognise their abilities and develop the confidence to move forward.

Progress does not always begin with perfection.

Often, it begins with discovering what works for you.

So, here is a useful question to reflect on.

What are the small things that help you feel ready to learn, create, or grow?
