There's No One Path Into a Career You'll Love

It's National Poetry Day, a celebration of words and the stories they tell. It's also a good time to think about your own story and where you want it to go next.
If you've left school and aren't sure what comes next, you might feel like everyone else has it figured out. They don't. There is no single route into a good career, and the path that works for you might look very different from anyone else's.
School isn't the whole picture
Exams and grades only measure a small part of what you can do. Many of the skills employers value most, like communication, creativity, teamwork and problem solving, are often learned outside the classroom. If school didn't show off your strengths, that doesn't mean you don't have them.
Everyone learns differently
In her latest video, Helen explains why there is no one right way to learn. Some people need to see how something works. Some need it explained. Many learn best by getting stuck in and doing it. The same goes for building a career. Finding the way you learn best is a big step towards finding the work that suits you.

Learning by doing
Give Get Go Education is a careers training platform that helps young people build real skills through hands on, creative projects. Drawing on Tony Klinger's long career as a filmmaker, writer and storyteller, we give you the chance to try real work, learn from experienced people, and discover what you're good at.
Simple steps to get started
Think about what you enjoy, not just what you were good at in school.
Try something practical, like writing, filming or creating a project of your own.
Look at the skills you already use every day, from organising to talking with people.
Research different jobs and the many different routes into them.
Treat setbacks as part of the journey, not a sign to give up.
