Let’s be real-time management isn’t exactly a strong suit for most creative professionals. You start working on a script, get distracted by an idea for another project, and suddenly find yourself deep in a YouTube rabbit hole about set designs from the 1800s, and before you know it, the day’s gone. Sound familiar? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

The good news? Managing your time doesn’t have to mean giving up your creative spark. Here are some simple (and doable) hacks to help you stay on track without feeling like you’re stuck in a boring 9-to-5 routine.

1. Prioritise Like a Pro

Not all tasks are created equal. Figure out what needs to be done today and what can wait. A great trick? The Eisenhower Matrix—split your tasks into:

  • Urgent & Important (Do it now!)

  • Important but Not Urgent (Plan for it)

  • Urgent but Not Important (Delegate if possible)

  • Neither Urgent nor Important (Maybe... just let it go?)

2. Time Block Your Day

Instead of working on everything at once (which never works), try time blocking. Dedicate specific chunks of your day to different tasks. For example:

Mornings: Writing scripts or brainstorming ideas Afternoons: Filming, rehearsing, or editing Evenings: Emails, meetings, or admin work

This way, your brain knows what to focus on instead of juggling 20 things at once.

3. The 90-Minute Focus Rule

Our brains work best in short, intense bursts. Try working for 90 minutes, then taking a 15–20-minute break. This method, inspired by the way top performers train, helps keep your energy levels high and prevents burnout.

4. Use the ‘Two-Minute Rule’

If something takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. Need to reply to a quick email? Just get it done. Small tasks pile up fast, and tackling them right away stops them from becoming overwhelming.

5. Set ‘Fake’ Deadlines

Creative people thrive under pressure—but waiting until the last minute can be a disaster. Try setting fake deadlines that are earlier than the actual ones. It’ll give you breathing room to refine your work without the last-minute panic.

6. Limit Distractions (Yes, Even Social Media!)

Scrolling through Instagram for "inspiration" can quickly turn into an hour of watching dog videos. Try apps like Forest or Freedom to block distractions when you need to focus. Or simply put your phone in another room!

7. Learn to Say No

Not every project or request deserves your time. If something doesn’t align with your goals (or if you're already stretched too thin), it’s okay to say no. Protect your time like it’s your most valuable resource—because it is.

8. End the Day with a Quick Plan for Tomorrow

Before wrapping up, jot down the three most important things to tackle the next day. That way, you start your morning with direction, instead of spending half an hour figuring out what to do.

Final Thoughts

Being a creative professional doesn’t mean you have to live in chaos. With a few smart habits, you can take control of your time, reduce stress, and still have plenty of space for creativity. Try these hacks and watch your productivity (and sanity) soar!

Now, go forth and create—without the stress of chasing deadlines!
