Why Finding a Mentor Can Be the Game-Changer You Didn’t Know You Needed

Ever tried figuring something out completely on your own, only to realise weeks later that someone could’ve told you the answer in five minutes? That’s where a mentor comes in.

A mentor isn’t just a wise person in a suit who gives you cryptic advice over coffee (although that happens too). They’re someone who’s been where you’re going — and who’s willing to help you dodge the potholes they once fell into. Think of them as a shortcut, not to success itself, but to the learning that gets you there faster.

The magic of having a mentor is that they give you what Google can’t: personal insight. They can tell you what worked for them, what didn’t, and why. They’ll spot your blind spots, celebrate your wins, and give you a gentle (or not-so-gentle) nudge when you’re slacking. And sometimes, it’s just about having someone who believes in you when your own belief wobbles.

Finding a mentor isn’t always about walking up to someone and saying, “Please be my mentor.” Often, it starts with building a connection. It could be a teacher, a former boss, a fellow creative, or someone you met at an event. The trick is to stay curious; ask questions, share your ideas, and let the relationship grow naturally.

And here’s the thing: mentorship is a two-way street. While you’re learning from them, you’re also bringing your own energy, ideas, and fresh perspective into the mix. It’s less about “teacher and student” and more about two people walking the same road, just at different points along the way.

If you’re serious about growing — in your career, creativity, or confidence — finding the right mentor might just be the best move you make this year.
